WHAT ARE ORAL PROBIOTICS

ORAL PROBIOTICS – FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE!

One of the hottest topics in medicine, healing, and with researchers is the vast, complex, microbial world that makes up our microbiome (a fancy word for all those tiny microorganisms that are part of us). These microflora are essential to our health, our emotional well-being and our very survival. It is a surprising fact to most people that the bacterial cells that are an integral part of our bodies outnumber human cells by a ratio of three to one! Oops, some people have even joked that the human body is really just a vehicle for bacterial cells.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria – if you split the word into “pro” and “biotics” you get “good for life”. In fact, probiotics have been best defined as “live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, provide a health benefit to the host.”

In recent years, scientists have increasingly come to understand the critical importance of an active, healthy, and balanced microbiome, or microbiota—fancy words for the ecological community of microorganisms that share our body space.

Our lives and lifespans have undoubtedly improved dramatically with the discovery of the role that “bad” bacteria play in disease and infection. And we all appreciate the value of cleanliness and modern hygiene in our daily lives. But whether it’s the advertising of cleaning products or the overuse of antibiotics in our food and lives, the idea that all bacteria are BAD and must be eradicated is a very pathetic and even dangerous idea.

To live well and be healthy, a person needs an active and balanced ecology of bacteria inside and outside. A lack or imbalance of bacteria can lead to serious health problems. This is pretty well understood and accepted when we talk about the gut and digestive system, but it also applies to almost every part of your body.

The oral cavity is no exception to this principle, and a healthy mouth has a very active ecology of microorganisms. Problems arise when certain bacterial strains, such as S. Mutans, dominate other bacteria and become the “bad” bacteria. It’s not that they’re actually bad, it’s that they overgrow, disrupt a healthy balance, and now their life cycle byproducts (such as enamel-eating acids or sulfur gases) lead to serious problems such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, and chronic bad breath.
